US dad who made daughter walk to school has no regrets

A US father says he has no regrets over his controversial decision to make his 10-year-old daughter walk kilometres to school in freezing weather as punishment for bullying.

After Matt Cox of Swanton, Ohio, found out that his daughter was suspended from her school bus for bullying another student for the second time, he told her she would be walking eight kilometres to school in two degrees Celsius weather over three days.

On Monday, Cox shared a video on Facebook of his daughter walking along a road, which went viral and sparked controversy among parents online.

"I absolutely do not feel I went overboard at all," Cox, 39, told People.

He said he put the video on social media to show his friends and family that "just because we love our children and would do anything for them does not mean we have to turn a blind eye to their actions".

Cox said he was disappointed when his daughter told him she had been suspended a second time for calling a student names and blocking the student from leaving the school bus.

Cox had grounded Kirsten and taken away her TV after her first offence.

He took the more radical approach to make her walk the 8km to school over the three-day suspension period the second time.

He told People he was sure she had learned her lesson even though she had been upset at first.

In the footage, Kirsten is shown walking on the side of the road wearing a backpack as Cox trailed behind in his car.

"Let me make this extremely clear: bullying is unacceptable, especially in my household," Cox says in the video.

Cox told People he never expected the clip to go viral, but he was grateful to shed light on bullying.

"I know a lot of you parents are not going to agree with this, but that is alright because I'm doing what I feel is right to teach my daughter a lesson and to stop her from bullying," he said in the video.
