Father who fractured baby son's skull, leaving him disabled, sentenced to jail

SINGAPORE: A father who hit his crying infant son two years ago, fracturing his skull, was sentenced on Friday (Nov 9) to six years' jail and six strokes of the cane.

The 30-year-old man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his son, had pleaded guilty to one charge of voluntarily causing grievous hurt to the child, then six months old.

The boy, who is now a toddler, still suffers medical problems from the injuries he suffered. He cannot sit on his own, is unable to do anything independently and cannot express himself.

On Aug 26, 2016, the boy's crying woke his mother up between 1am and 3am. She gave him milk and carried him, but he kept crying, the prosecution told the court.

The baby's brother and father were sleeping in the same room, and his cries woke his father, who became frustrated.

He hit the baby once on the head with his right hand, shouting: "Shut up la, shut up la. Later I have work, you make noise, I cannot sleep."
